Why We Butcher our own Turkey

OH MY GOD. HOW COULD YOU RASIE THAT ANIMAL AND THEN KILL IT?  HOW CRUEL!?  YOU ARE SO HEARTLESS!  THERE IS NOTHING KIND ABOUT KILLING. Ok, I get it.  I was vegetarian for SEVEN YEARS.  I have seen this mentality.   My choice to be vegetarian  was not always in the mindset of “killing animals is wrong.”  It was more in the mindset of “if I cant raise this meat myself, take its life, or hunt this meat I will...

Eco Dying with Plants Tutorial

Im kind of slightly…ok…significantly obsessed with the plant world and what I can do with what Mother Nature is providing right outside our door steps.  A month or so ago, I attended a girls night where we did just this…dyed hankies with plants.  From that second on I was fascinated with this.  I have them framed proudly, like works of art, on my mantle from that night.  I think they are so genuine, raw, and beautiful!  I had some left...

Blackberry Chia Seed Jam

We pick back up with homeschooling next Monday so I am hoping to soak up as much fun as we can this week. This trip was certainly more interesting than our lasts with our sweet Bear in tow. He surely enjoyed himself! Im not sure if picking the berries or watching Bear get covered in berries was more rewarding! When we got home I knew I wanted to make something special with the berries we picked so I decided to...

BECAUSE….

WHAT’S ONE MORE??? BABY #4 COMING THIS SPRING! I am so excited to welcome this baby Earthside and to add another member to our family…and who am  I kidding…another egg collector and weed picker 😉 I cant wait to keep you all in the loop on how things progress over the next few months. And can I just say?  THANK GOODNESS FOR NOT BEING PREGNANT AGAIN DURING THE SUMMER! Now, I need cake. pizza. chocolate milk. and ice cream. The...

Preserving Carrots from the Garden + Our Best Carrot Growing Tips

PRESERVING CARROTS: Freezing carrots are my most favorite way to save them for soups, pot pies, and stews for the fall and winter months. 1. Wash and scrub the carrots generously. I soak them in a sink bath and take a brush to scrub off all of the dirt. Children LOVE the busy work of washing carrots so let them in on the fun!  I do not peel them like some do as I find that method wastes a lot...

BITS + PIECES {SUMMER}

The veggies are rolling in faster than we can eat, the kids are outside until 9 each night, the lightening bugs are putting on a show we sit to watch on the porch in the evenings. The flowers are blooming, the animals are thriving, chicks are hatching under broody mamas. It is in fact a magical time to be on the homestead....

Blackwater Falls Camping Trip + Bear Toast

This past weekend we took a little family getaway to Blackwater Falls.  It was just a one night camping trip, but it was seriously so fun!  We really didn’t want to come home.  We become slaves to the garden, farm, and life in general it was almost like we forgot how to have fun and just DO NOTHING for a bit.  Not to mention having ZERO cell service and totally unplugging was the best part! We love camping, but I...

Spring

You know its spring on the homestead when… Your table looks like this… There are diapers on the line… The yard is covered in wishing weeds… Shoes are optional…for all ages 😉 Theres something other than weeds in the garden… You are greeted with dew drop covered wheatgrass in the mornings… Your sink is filled with wild harvested greens… and tiny humans…   The bees are busy buzzing… babies are being born… Goats are busy (and happy) snacking on all...

Meet us.

I am so excited to have this new little space to share our projects, recipes, homeschooling adventures and such.  Spring is here and things around our little homestead are getting into full swing.  Its my favorite time of year and I have lots to share, but first I wanted to introduce the people and faces that make this dream go round. Papa –  Hunter. Fisher. Builder of things. Mountain man.  Beard grower. Brings home the bacon (figuratively and literally).  ...
